Description
During the New Space age, traditional forms of traffic control have been proven obsolete, due to the increased amount of area outer space provides, and the three-dementional plain now available to drivers. To address the new issues and dangers of space traffic, authorities have set up a series of "Space Lanes"; designated areas of space and atmosphere that most liscensed craft are required to follow to reach destinations.
A typical space lane is 100 Km wide and 80 to 120 KM above the planet surface. The lane is split into a double decker system; with the bottum lane going one direction, and the top lane going the other. Interlaping lanes generally have one of the sections rising gradually and the other lowering slowly, which ships GPS guides pilots through.
Lanes between orbiting bodies like moons and their planets can be complicated, due to the moon never staying within a fixed location above the planet. To compensate, the GPS system keeps an up to date record of the moon and it's trajectory, designating the the closest points between the moon and the planet the designated lane for inter-celestial travel.
Every ship, before leaving the assembly line, is fitted with a so called "GPS" which shows the pilot of the space craft designated traffic areas, and alerts them when they are veering off-course.
Only police vessels, military craft and ships with special permits are allowed to divert from the space lanes
